"Recently, my mother celebrated her 80th birthday. Now, she lives in England, so transporting a stone from here to there would be outrageously expensive, you'd think. Well, for a 10 Kg stone (22 pounds) of 15"x15"x3" dimensions, UPS will quote just $130. That's still quite a lot of money just to get a birthday present from here to there, but much less than I'd have expected, and lots lots less than going in person.

Well, I didn't send the stone: I bought flowers from a shop there and sent the flower shop a family photo to deliver with them. That combination cost as much as buying and transporting the stone would have !!"

The quote above from a friend of ours shows that a stone sent as a gift needn't cost the earth. Giving an engraved stone is a highly unusual way to show one's appreciation of the friendship of another.
